This series investigates the issue of tension and its discharge. According to Freud our ’Id’ side seeks to release tension according to basic instinct and desire and strives to do so in an impulsive and instantly gratifying manner. This contrasts to our super ego which is responsible for our internalized moral principles and urges us towards perfection and civilized behaviour.
The Ego - our conscious mind attempts to release tension in a realistic and socially acceptable manner whilst
still attempting to satisfy our instinctual desires. My work explores the tension that arises between these conflicting forces that are battling in our minds. It looks at tension cycles at different stages from the very controlled to liberation. It examines the constant battle for balance between control and release and the attempts to free one’s self from stifling self-imposed inhibitions.
The choice of clay is chosen for its cathartic and physical properties. The clay is pushed and punched which stretches and strains under the pressure. For making these pieces I would charge myself up to a degree of tension and then release it through the art medium. The pieces therefore are a direct expression and result from tension being released.
