LASANAA’s latest art residency concludes with an exhibit
The exhibit taking place today at Nexus Culture Nepal will see individual art works and performances along with collaborative pieces by three artists

Nov 15, 2017-The concluding event of the LASANAA Alternative Art Space’s ongoing artist residency which features artists Kate McElroy, Hishilla Maharjan and Bibek Thapa, is taking place today at Nexus Culture Nepal in Lalitpur. The event will feature individual art works and performances along with collaborative pieces by the three artists; an open studio; and interactive artist presentations.
Over the course of the residency, McElroy, an Irish artist, has been working on themes of connection through media such as photography, performance, and semi-transparent materials. “Her work lies on the liminality of the visible and the invisible and offers us alternatives to the reality in which we normally see,” reads a statement issued by the organisers.
Likewise, artist Maharjan has been working on themes of female body and sexuality; while Thapa’s work revolves around the motif of city and the memory.
The ongoing artist residency, organised by LASANAA, is one among the string of residencies the non-profit has conducted of late. In May, the residency was hosted in Sindhupalchowk, one of the worst-affected districts by the 2015 earthquakes, for an “artistic rebuild” of the district. The 20 artists featured in the residency sought to help out the locals to overcome the emotional toll of the quakes, by acquainting them with the arts.
“With the artist’ residency workshops, and with the LASAANAA project as a whole, we aim to redefine the meaning of art,” said Asmina Ranjit, artist and founder of the project, “By bridging the artists’ community with the outside community, we aim to inspire people to broaden their outlook on the arts.”
Ranjit went on, “The traditional notions of the arts as something created by a bunch of aloof people often living in a self-imposed hermitary, out of the society and the political discourse is the foundation we aim to reconfigure. Our attempt—what we call artivism—is to encourage political reckoning and critical thinking through the arts.”
The event will start 3pm onwards at NexUs Culture Nepal, Lalitpur.
