The ‘Unfurl’ sculptures are made of layers of different types of papers and plastics of varied transparency. The first is sewn more tightly with the string taut and the needles piercing the paper. The second has burst open wider, the strings broken in places, so that you can see into the centre of the piece. The pieces are reminiscent of cocoons or with their semi transparent layers they evoke the boundaries we create as individuals to protect ourselves. They may also evoke layers of consciousness, bound together tightly and then burst open. They educe varying mind and body states of the individual, from constricted to expansive. The needle and the thread can be seen as healing, an attempt to bind and keep together, however it also pierces the paper in places, simultaneously being destructive.
